It all began way back in 1973 when Mr. Samual Jay left a small legacy on his passing in order to purchase a minibus that could transport members of the local community who, through medical or geographical locations, were unable to access local transport. Through this charitable donation, Sammy Community Transport was born and in recognition of this gift this is the reason w known as Sammy.
In 2012 Sammy absorbed the management and day to day running of the services provided by the now dissolved Chichester Community Transport. This service having served its local community for 10 years and in its final year, transported 6800 passengers using its Dial -A- Ride service and was continuing to be run from the Sammys Bognor office until a recent move to new offices in Tangmere near Chichester.
Then, in July 2017, Sammy Transport and Arun CoOrdinated Community Transport decided to merge their operations and pool both their resources and vehicles. This created an even larger Community Transport Service operating along the South Coast from Portsmouth to Brighton. This merger has provided additional benefits for the communities of the Arun area, Bognor and Chichester allowing them greater access to additional transportation services with which to serve their needs.
The service now provides a total transport solution which includes: a social car service giving help to anyone needing transport to medical appointments and other social events, a pre bookable Dial A Ride service in and around Bognor and Chichester and surrounding areas and a Shopping Bus Service which covers many major supermarkets on set days. In addition to this there is also a weekly Club Bus which takes people to historic places, eateries, musuems and other places of interest which is the charities commitment to prevent social isolation and enhance well being among the elderly, lonely and venerable. Lastly, the charity also provides wheel chair accessible vehicles, both self drive and driver operated, for those confined to a wheel chair enabling those members of the community a greater freedom and quality of life.
Today the charity continues to grow with 20 Chichester based volunteer car drivers, 13 part time minibus drivers, 5 WAV Drivers (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles) and 4 part time and 1 full time office staff. In addition to our Chichester Team we also have 30 Volunteer Car Drivers based at our Ford office with 6 Part time minibus Drivers and 4 part time office staff. Our total vehicle fleet now comprises of 12 minibuses and 6 wheelchair accessible cars some of which are self drive for other charities, groups or organisations.
Although the charity endeavours to meet every demand placed on them, there may be occasions when we are unable to meet all of the requests on a given day due to our reliance on both part time drivers and volunteers to carry out some of these essential services. We are truly indebted to them and the generosity of their time they donate to us and without them, we could not do what we do for other members of our communities.
